What is Asthma?
Asthma is a common lung condition that causes occasional breathing difficulties.

Side Effects

The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently released its final results on Ventolin HFA, a new asthma inhaler for the first time, with a new label to warn patients and healthcare providers of potentially dangerous side effects. The FDA said it had not received any reports of a sudden drop in blood pressure or heart rate during the first three months of 2013 and did not recommend using this medicine as a rescue inhaler. However, it is not recommended for patients with heart disease, diabetes, or certain allergic reactions. It also doesn't recommend using a combination of two or more medications to treat asthma, because patients have experienced worsening asthma symptoms.
In a letter to the FDA, Health Canada and Health Perspectus (HCP) announced that it is no longer requiring patients to seek emergency medical care before using an inhaler. The agency says it will continue to monitor the safety and effectiveness of Ventolin HFA as a rescue inhaler, which it said should be available in pharmacies or hospitals for those who have asthma and other allergic-type reactions.
This means that Ventolin HFA is not available in most pharmacies and hospitals across the country.
In an email, Health Canada said, “As of Nov. 4, 2013, no patient has been informed of Ventolin HFA being available in Canadian pharmacies or hospitals and no patient has received a prescription for a Ventolin inhaler in the U. S.”
FDA says it will continue to warn patients and healthcare providers about the risks of using Ventolin HFA to relieve symptoms of asthma, and to discuss any other risks to patients.
In its response, Health Canada said it will provide information to the FDA about the safety and effectiveness of Ventolin HFA when used as part of a preventative medicine program that includes exercise and other preventive measures.
In November, the FDA asked Health Canada for comment on the drug’s label to warn consumers about the risks of its use for specific conditions and to include specific recommendations for patients who have asthma.
Health Canada said it was not aware of any recent studies linking Ventolin HFA to cardiac effects, and it is not recommending any further drug use or other warnings to patients. Health Canada said the agency was not aware of any studies or evidence that Ventolin HFA could harm a heart.
“This is not a new finding, but it is the first time we have found an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, heart failure and death among patients who use Ventolin HFA in combination with other medications to treat asthma,” Health Canada said in a statement.
